Project Overview
Dlight is proud to play a key role in the ongoing urban renewal of Ireland’s oldest city. Waterford’s city centre is steeped in Viking and Norman heritage, with a network of narrow lanes and alleys that connect its many culturally and historically significant buildings.
The primary goal of this project phase was to deliver high-quality enhancements to the public realm, creating improved streetscapes, upgraded pedestrian areas, modernised public seating and energy-efficient lighting. These upgrades were designed to support the city’s vibrant mix of retail, leisure, and tourism offerings, while preserving its historic charm.
Given the narrow layout of Waterford’s streets and the need to maintain an open, uncluttered appearance, Dlight’s design team developed innovative lighting solutions.
The final design introduced high-efficiency catenary-suspended light fittings, elegantly hung from cables anchored to surrounding facades. This approach provided uniform illumination without the visual intrusion of ground-mounted poles.
To further enhance the city’s unique ambience, the team also integrated recessed uplighting within landscaped areas and linear LED lighting into public seating zones, subtly accentuating the character of Waterford’s historic lanes while improving safety and atmosphere after dark.
