Project Overview
The UCD O’Connor Centre for Learning was conceived around active learning, with a mix of formal and informal spaces where students can develop and practice the diverse skills needed to thrive in the 21st century. Since opening in January 2026, the centre has realised this vision, supporting inclusive, collaborative learning across a variety of high-quality spaces. Its atrium, learning commons, and flexible social areas have quickly become central to daily campus life, fostering connection and creativity among students and staff.
Our team designed and delivered the lighting solutions for the project, creating a cohesive and dynamic environment that enhances both learning and social interaction. The strategy layered ambient, task, and accent lighting across different zones, balancing comfort, clarity, and energy efficiency using Ledluks ILO Linear Luminaires, Light 4U Weda Track Lights, Karizma Luce Dea Vesta Pendants, and LedsC4 Vol and Lite Downlights, all DALI controlled for precise dimming.
Classrooms and learning spaces benefit from carefully coordinated light levels, glare reduction, and Kelvin temperature selection, supporting student alertness, reducing eye strain, and promoting wellbeing throughout the day.
The project presented unique challenges due to inconsistent ceiling heights and varied materiality, requiring careful coordination of lighting distribution, fixture selection, and surface reflectance to ensure visual continuity and optimal performance across all spaces.
The lighting enhances comfort, focus, and wellbeing across the centre, supporting both study and social interaction while creating a welcoming, adaptable environment for students and staff.
